How to talk about CV gaps — honestly

The two-sentence framing that works for nine out of ten hiring managers.

#CV & interviews

Career breaks are normal. Raising children, caring for family, recovering from burnout — these are not things to apologise for. But how you frame the gap on your CV and in interviews matters.

The framing that works: "I took time out to raise my family. I am now returning with the same skills, plus a lot more patience, prioritisation and the ability to get things done with very little time."

That is it. Honest, short, forward-looking. No over-explaining.

A few rules: - Do not lie or stretch dates. It always unravels. - Put the break on the CV as a line, not a black hole. "2021–2024: Career break (family)." - Lead with what you bring now, not what you missed. - Name one or two things you did keep sharp — volunteering, a course, managing a household budget, a side project.

Most hiring managers in NZ have either taken a break themselves or hired someone who did. They are not looking for a perfect line of continuous employment. They are looking for someone capable, reliable and ready. Show them that.
