Every job ad says "flexible" now. Few mean it. Here is how to screen for the real thing before you say yes.
Green flags: 1. The ad states actual hours or a range, not just "flexible." 2. They mention school hours, term-time or compressed weeks specifically. 3. There are other parents on the team — ask. 4. Core hours are defined (e.g. 10–3) rather than "always on." 5. They talk about outcomes, not desk time. 6. Remote or hybrid is in writing, not a verbal maybe. 7. They have a parental leave policy they are proud to share. 8. Meetings are scheduled within core hours. 9. They ask what you need, rather than telling you what is allowed. 10. The manager gives a concrete example of someone working flexibly. 11. Job-share is on the table for senior roles. 12. They do not flinch when you mention pick-ups.
Red flags: "flexible for the right person," pressure to be online after hours, or vague answers when you ask for specifics.
Ask in the interview: "Can you give me an example of how someone on the team works flexibly?" The answer tells you everything.
